High School Basketball Star Shot And Killed In The Laurel Shooting

DELAWARE: LAUREL According to a Facebook post by the Laurel School District, Corey Mumford, 17, was the victim of the fatal shooting that took place at the Wexford Village Apartments in Laurel on Friday.

Mumford was a standout basketball player for the school’s Varsity team as a senior at Laurel High School. Mumford was named one of the top 15 “Gold Boys” players in the state in March by the Delaware Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association.

According to the Laurel School District, he had also just earned the MVP Award for the Blue-Gold Basketball All-Star Game.

According to reports, the school district will convene a faculty meeting on Monday to provide Laurel High School personnel instructions on how to help upset pupils.

Students and faculty will have access to Delaware State Police Victim Services, Laurel Ministerial Leaders, and Laurel Middle and High School Health Coordinators and Counselors.

“He is, indeed, gone far too soon,” Laurel School District said in their Facebook post. “Let us work together to stop the violence that ends lives and breaks hearts.”

“We were lucky enough to have Corey play with us for 1 tournament last summer and our young boys were lined up to watch him play,” Shore Elite Basketball, a young basketball team from Berlin, Maryland, also posted on social media. “He was a highlight reel. They had to know when his next game was.”

The Delaware State Police are still looking for the shooter in this fatal incident, and they are doing their investigation.
