How Basehor-Linwood Assistance Services Helps Our Community

Basehor Linwood Assistance Services, better known as BLAS (pronounced blaze), is an organization here in Basehor that runs three main programs: Adopt-a-Family, a food bank, and a backpack program. All three programs are designed to assist struggling members of the community in some way. BLAS has its headquarters located next to the Methodist Church here in Basehor.

BLAS is always looking for donations to help those in need. Not only do they stock up on food items, but they also collect and distribute toiletries. The way in which families get help is quite simple: they enter the office and fill out a sheet. This lets BLAS know what they need. After the form is filled out, BLAS gathers the materials and gives them to the family.

The food bank is maintained through both monetary and canned food donations from groups all around the Basehor community, including BLHS. It helps provide families who are struggling financially with the nutrition and sustenance they need. If you’re looking to make a donation, check out the list to the right to see what BLAS is most in need of.

The family makes a list of holiday presents that they are unable to purchase, and BLAS partners with volunteers and groups around the community in order to get those items for the family. Afterwards, the family is given their gifts and is able to have a more joyful holiday season.

BLAS’s backpack program is rather new, and is simple yet impactful. First, backpacks are donated from students in the high school and other community members. Then, the backpacks are filled with supplies for students such as pencils, pens, paper, and colored pencils. They are distributed to students who are in need of supplies.

The people at BLAS help make our community a great one. They can inspire all of us with their devotion of time and money to people they barely know.
