Many people in the community are in need of help. The newspaper and yearbook staff decided to lend a helping hand to a family, giving them clothes and other items that they needed.

“I think it’s really important to remember that it is a season of giving and not just receiving.  It’s easy to forget how blessed most of us in the community are and that not everyone finds themselves in the same situation. I asked both my newspaper and yearbook staff if adopting a family was something they would want to do and almost unanimously agreed to pitch in,” journalism adviser Erin Amrein said.

Senior Emma Hall, who participated in the donation, believes it is important to give your time and energy to those in need.

I think it’s important because at the end of the day, we’re all human beings with lives and families and goals. We all live on this planet and share this space, so it’s important that we help each other and build each other up rather than tear each other down.” Hall said.

Both Hall and Amrein have donated to various causes outside of the adopt-a-family event. Both Hall and Amrein donate through churches, GoFundMe, and other places where there is a need.

“Donating is great for so many reasons.  Not only are you helping others in a time of need, but also shows you a lot about yourself.  You cannot help but feel good once you helped someone else.  However, it’s also a nice reality check.  I think about the gifts I’ve bought for my family members or items I’ve asked for that I’m expecting as gifts, and then I see other asking for the basics like shirts, shoes, pants, socks and underwear, and I’m like ‘wow,’” Amrein said.
