The 17th Annual Bobcat Invitational Basketball Tournament took place from the Jan. 16 until the final showdown between Basehor-Linwood and Topeka-Hayden. Teams were divided into two pools consisting of three teams with pool A containing Basehor-Linwood, Schlagle, and Park Hill and pool B containing Ottawa, Hayden, and Shawnee Mission North. Hayden dominated its pool with a victory on Jan. 16 against Shawnee Mission North winning 70-40. On the other side of the bracket, the Bobcats won their first game on Jan. 17 against Schlagle 74-62. Each team moved to the next round and remained parallel to each other.

In the next round, Hayden beat Ottawa on Jan.  19 in an overtime game that ended with a close win by Hayden 84-80 and advancing them to the championship. Basehor followed suit with a close game that same night against Park Hill. Despite strong defense from Park, the Bobcats took home a 45-37 victory with a ticket to the championship game.

The Bobcats and Wildcats were given a day off to prep for the final game as the two teams they had beaten fought for fifth place. Fans may remember that the Bobcats lost to Hayden earlier in the season by just one point at the Hayden away game in Topeka after going into overtime. This tight match before seemed to guarantee a close game, but the Bobcats slowly lost that tightness.
After coming out strong in the first quarter, Hayden maintained their lead until late in the second quarter when the Bobcats managed to tie it up, but Hayden regained its lead and kept it through the second half. After a fourth quarter that was completely out of the Bobcats’ paws, Hayden finished strong with the final score of 58-49. Hayden took home the title for the 17th Annual Bobcat Invitational and left the Bobcats with an open spot in the trophy case.
