The 12 hour endeavor(7 am to 7 pm) of 6 students proved to have paid off on December 16 at the Regional debate tournament, which was hosted by Jefferson West High School. Being the first ever in Basehor history, Erica Brady, Sofie Otting, Austin Crist and Spencer Tucker, along with their alternates, Lane Barrette and Maddison Rayl, placed 2nd, which qualified them to State 4-speaker debate. Along with this victory, the students and Debate Coach, Rebecca Knowles, experience the excitement for what’s to come.

“It was like the best moment I have ever experienced. Definitely one of the top 5 moments of my teaching career. I was just so happy that my team was able to pull through and set school history,” said Knowles.

Regional 4-speaker debate requires each team bring a selection of judges for the tournament. Knowles brought along  spanish teacher, Kara Myers, as well as family friend, June-Ann Lopez.

“As a judge for the tournament, I got to see first-hand the skill level of our competitors. We were up against fierce talent but we were able to make it to victory. It was really fun to witness this event and see the joy in everyone’s faces upon receiving the news,” said Myers.

The mutual joy shared amongst the debaters, as well as the judges brought along, were very much prevalent in everyone’s spirits, especially Junior, Erica Brady.

“After finding out that I had qualified for 4-Speaker Debate at State, I was absolutely ecstatic. It’s hard to describe the level of excitement I felt for my partner[Sofia Otting] and I, the other 4-Speaker Team[Austin Crist and Spencer Tucker], and BLHS. My partner and I were both very excited and we celebrated with the other state qualifiers. Making BLHS history is certainly a fun memory that I won’t forget any time soon,” said Brady.

State debate for 2-speaker teams, as well as the newly state-qualified 4-speaker team, will partake Jan. 12-13.
