On Saturday, Feb. 2, senior Mallory Folsom and freshman Josh Benton qualified for state in Piano Solo after both receiving “1” ratings.

“The day at Baker was stressful and intimidating. I practiced on three different pianos beforehand to make sure I was prepared,” said Folsom. “I was very nervous to perform this year because of that awful experience [last year], but I had such a great support system and a new mindset this year and I set my personal goal and achieved it.“

Folsom’s piece was entitled Tarantella by Paul Beaumont. This is both Folsom’s and Benton’s first year qualifying for the state competition.

“It felt so good and well deserved. I finally had gotten the confidence to perform a solo and I had practiced so much. I actually was so emotional that I shed a couple of tears on stage,” said Folsom.

Folsom and Benton will be performing at the state festival on Feb. 16 at Wichita State University.
