Finals Week Pep Talk

It’s come down to that time yet again. That dreaded time full of studying (ha, yeah right), sleeping (another funny joke), and worrying (okay, yeah, that one’s true). That terrible time that they like to call “Finals”.

Finals are like that nightmare that wake you up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night for some people. To some, finals might actually be a breeze. If you are one of those people, consider yourselves so very lucky.

However, if you’re anything like me, you’re one of those people who are dreading those huge tests that are going to come Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. I’m not going to lie, finals in some of my classes have got me really worrying…but I don’t think we should be worrying.

No, I don’t think we should be worrying. Because you see, finals are a pain, yes, but they aren’t…unsurpassable. Think of them like anything else in your life that’s challenging that you’ve conquered. What makes them different from anything else?

Think of some challenge you’ve overcome. Some sports event where you faced off against an ‘undefeatable’ team, yet you won. Some concert where you had a solo you knew you weren’t good at, yet you still nailed it. Think of something you’ve done in your life that was hard, yet you managed to succeed.

Well, how are finals any different from those? Finals are hard, yes. Finals can be really hard. I know, trust me…I’m having a hard time preparing for math. No matter how hard they may seem, they really are conquerable. You’ve just got to set your mind to it. The only way you can lose is if you say that you’ve lost…otherwise the battle isn’t over.

To the freshmen, the class of 2018: you guys are new to this, but these aren’t your first set of finals. These won’t be any different from last semester. If these tests terrify you, I get it. I was one of those kids, and still am somewhat. Know that it may seem like you’ve got a lot more finals to go through, but also know that you’re going to get the hang of things, and it’s going to get easier to prepare. You’ll get into the groove of things, and you’ll be fine. I promise you that.

To the sophomores, the class of 2017; I’m with you guys. This isn’t our first crack at this, and it certainly won’t be our last. That doesn’t mean we should fear the future, it simply means we should create it. Our focus should be on school right now. Just like all the other grades in this school, we are not alone. Every class is going through this. Guys, we’re half way through our high school career! There’s hope on the horizon.

To the juniors, the class of 2016; you guys are so close. You’re going to take these finals, and the next time you step into this school, you’ll be walking in on top. Next year, you’re going to be seniors. You’re so close to making it out of here and into your lives…don’t give up now! Hit these tests head on, and you’ll be okay. Keep pushing to the end, you’re almost there.

My final remarks are simple. I wish all of you the best of luck. It may seem dark, but there’s only three days of finals, and then we’re out of here! Last Friday was our last one of the 2014-2015 school year. We’re all so close to summer, let’s finish it on a strong note. Remember; the only way you can lose is if you say that you’ve lost, otherwise the battle isn’t over.
