Track Attack!

May is an exciting month here at BLHS. There’s something going on nearly every day; whether it’s a sporting event, senior checkout, graduation, finals, etc. In regards to sports, softball and baseball started their regional games on the 13th. Softball starts out against Bishop Ward in Eudora, while baseball takes on DeSoto at Baldwin. Golf is also participating in regionals in Atchison. Following the week up, track heads off to regionals on the 17th in Baldwin.

Whether they’re in track or field events, nearly everyone heading off to Baldwin is nervous. Lane Young, senior, participates in the 100 meter dash, 4X100 relay, and the 200 meter dash. Last year, Young along with Trey Kincheloe, Jesse Jones, and Zac Smith placed 7th at the KSHSAA 2012 State Track & Field Meet for the 4X100 meter relay. The year before that, Young and Kincheloe were on the 4X100 team that became the 4A state champions. The other two were Daniel Prioleau and Miles Brown, graduates of the 2011 class.

“We’re hoping to bring another championship in this year,” Young said. This year’s 4X100 team consists of him, Kincheloe, Alex Jackson, and Bryan Crowe. “The past two meets have been slightly rough, but that’s the past. We’re hopeful and ready,” an excited Young said.

As far as his other events go, Young is just as hopeful for those. “I like the 100 meter dash better than the 200 mostly because of the distance. It’s not as much of a struggle. However, I’m ready to try my best on Friday.”

The field participators are just as hyped. Victoria Smith, junior, is involved in discus, shot put, and javelin. “My strongest event is javelin. I’m ready to prove myself on Friday,” Smith said.

It’s been a great year for sports here at BLHS, hopefully it stays that way as we head towards the end of the month.
