This week varsity boys’ basketball will be competing in the sub-state tournament, Friday, opening up against Atchinson in the first round.

“The expectations for substate is to win. We want to win it all and we want to go to state for the first time in two years,” starting junior Nolan Ford said.

While the team expects to make it past the first round, they know they’ll have to work past their disadvantage of being young and inexperienced.

“Just to play our best and play as a team, and not make stupid turnovers and silly mistakes,” Ford said.

With the team being mostly juniors and one sophomore Ford believes although they have less of an experience they do have some strengths when it comes to shooting.

“I feel like this year we’re a better shooting team, Connor [Younger], and Tucker [Johnson] , and Kobe [Sifford] all are great shooters and last year I felt like we really didn’t have that,” Ford said.

A win against Atchinson would advance the Bobcats to the championship round, where they would face off against the winner of the Tonganoxie, Piper match-up.

“[I would rather play] Tongie because we’ve already beat them twice this year, but we’ll probably play Piper and we’re just going to have to play our best,” Ford said.

Ford knows that a competitive Piper team will be difficult to beat, but looks at the ways he can contribute to the team.

“This year I’ve definitely had to increase my defense and my hustle and I can’t really get tired because I play most of the game,” Ford said.

The Bobcats take on Atchinson, Friday at 7:30 at home.
