The varsity volleyball team played their home opener and first games of the season on Aug. 28 against DeSoto and Lansing. This was the first time the team played against their new league, the United Kansas Conference (UKC).

“I’m excited to play against the new league. This league contains great competition that will only make us better,” said senior Magi Osterhaus. “The teams we are playing are good teams. They, along with us, are ranked within the top seven teams in 5A… Our team is full of people who compete at a high level and know what it takes to win.”

The team went into the games with an injured player, sophomore Jenna Zydlo, and had to make some last minute adjustments the night before their games adding junior Sadie McWilliams to the roster.

“Even with an injured starter as of Monday, we came together as a team and played as hard as we could,” said senior Ava Seaton.

The team fell to both DeSoto and Lansing in the two games.

“The outcome of the game was mainly because our unforced errors. We made silly mistakes that cost us many points,” said junior Sami Fisher.

Although the team lost both games, they expect it will help them grow to be better for future games this season.

“The rest of the season I expect us to be a team that goes all out every point. We are not a tall team so we need to be scrappy. It is all about the effort,” said Fisher.

The volleyball team’s next game is Aug. 30 against Leavenworth and Shawnee Heights at Leavenworth High School.
