The first varsity football game of the season, on Friday, Aug. 31 against Tonganoxie, has Head Coach Rod Stallbaumer excited for this year with a final score of 42-6.

“I think we got off to a good start, but the key to any season is to keep getting better from week to week,” Stallbaumer said. “There were two big positives from this game; how well the new guys on defense stepped in, and the way Dylan Mussett managed the offense.”

The offensive and defensive skills are staying pretty much the same this season, however the team is using “two platooning” as a strategy.

“This year we’re two platooning, meaning we have 11 different guys for defense, so they only practice defense, and 11 for offense, minus a couple of guys who can go both ways. That hopefully helps us stay fresher,” Stallbaumer said.

According to Stallbaumer, one low from the game was there were lots of penalties, which could be because of new enforced rules.

“We have to hit the other team below the shoulders, so some penalties were head to head contacts,” junior Brock Hofer said.

The next game is at Lansing on Friday, Sept. 7 at  7 p.m.
