It has been decided that for the 2019-2020 school year, girls’ and boys’ bowling and tennis teams will be added to the list of sports that students will be able to participate in. Girls’ tennis will be a fall sport, while boys’ tennis will be played in the spring. Both bowling teams will be a winter sport.

At the informational meeting on Thursday, teams were introduced to their new coaches, Kelly Kanan (bowling) and Ryan Kazmaier (tennis). Kazmaier stepped down as the girls’ golf coach to take the tennis job, being replaced by J.D. Heatherly, who will also teach science.

“The reason I wanted to coach bowling is because it’s one of those sports off to the side that I’ve done in years past. I was in a bowling league as a kid and when that [coaching] position opened I was pretty excited because years ago I tried to meet with the previous athletic director to get a bowling team going, but there wasn’t the interest back then, so that’s why I decided to coach for next year,” said Kanan.

Athletic Director, Ross Schwisow made the decision to add tennis and bowling, along with principal, Jarred Fuhrman.

“There are several benefits to adding these sports. One is our goal of getting 100% of our students connected to a school activity and having these new activities will help reach them. It will also allow our students to have the opportunity to compete in KSHSAA sports that we have not been able to compete in before and now have that opportunity,” said Schwisow.

As the season grows closer, more information will be released about tryouts and meet and practice dates.
