Girls Set Distance Medley Record at Bobcat Relays

The Basehor-Linwood track team shined on their home meet on Apr. 9. The girls’ team finished in 1st and the boys placed 2nd. The highlight of the day was a single race that the girls dominated from the beginning. The girls participated in their first distance medley relay. The race is where the team runs 1200, 400, 800 and 1600 meters.

To start out the race freshman Alyiah Shirley took an early lead the first 200 meters in, and they never looked back. She led by more than 50 meters after just the first lap. She continued to build the girls’ advantage and helped the Bobcats lead by 100 meters when she finished. Soon after, senior Jenna Zydlo finished helping the girls lead by half a lap. Junior Lexy Augustine held the advantage, but when junior Rylee Jones started, everyone’s eyes were drawn to her. She stole the show and lapped Piper’s runner. She strolled to the finish line and capped off a record night with an easy win with a time of 14:28.9

“It feels unreal to be a part of the record because nobody was expecting it coming into this season,” said Jones.

This was just one factor in the girls’ win at the meet. The following athletes also won their events.

Girls Shot Put- senior Isabel Sibert

Girls Javelin- senior Isabel Sibert

Girls High Jump- senior Jenna Zydlo
